Baroque Dub - wearing nothing but a dub attitude [1999-2012]

Baroque Dub was one of the projects, that encouraged me to start an own podcast. 44 mixtapes, 16 digital 7" and 12" single releases, a web radiostation, samples and midi riddims spoke for them selves (btw: all releases can be downloaded for free here or here).
Starting with "reggae tinged electronica with one foot in the chillout lounge and one foot on the dance floor", the second track features Sure Dread as well as the veteran Barry Brown. "Cuss Cuss" and Jackie Mittoo´s "Drum Song" are digital reworks of the classic riddims, of course. The next two tunes are moving in a little bit darker electro-reggae/dubstep direction. With "Every Tongue Shall Tell" the mixtape turned back to dub reggae, "Artibella Dub" is an organ driven version of the Ken Boothe hit song. From "the soundtrack to an imaginary film detailing the exploits of a young man's struggle through the trials of ghetto life" recorded using an AtariST, an E64 sampler and a Mackie mixer "King Sequence" is a sample loaded masterpiece from 1999 (!). "Ghetto People Song" is a LalaBella riddim, originaly voiced by Everton Blender. Southside Dub: "A slinky anthem for more leftfield dancefloors." Ini Kamoze's "Burnin'" comes in a slow and heavy dub version, "Valley of Dub" appears in two droning versions. The set is finished with a "slow burning fat slice of electro dub" called "Lollipop Dub" . Booom!!

Alpha & Omega, Alpha Steppa, Dub Dynasty - Dubs Mightier Than Swords [1991-2017]

For all the fans of the UK Dub scene! Starting part one of this selection with some 1990s Alpha & Omega tunes with the voices of Nishka, the Exile, Dub Judah and Dayjah. Followed by two tunes from the split album with Hamburg based Iries featuring the unique voice of Pensi and John Sprosen on melodica. Closing the 1990s part with two majestic Disciples/Alpha & Omega remixes.

Part two takes a step ten years into the future: Alpha Steppa is on the scene and meets international artists like RSD, Flex Zagazzow, Lutan Fyah, Ras Tinny and Sistah Awa. And of course started colaborations with Alpha & Omega, somtimes together under the moniker "Dub Dynasty". Pressure Drop - Sounds Of Time (1992 - 2003)

One of the projects, that can never fail: Pressure Drop (aka the Blood Brothers: Justin Langlands and Dave Henley). Named after a Toots song, playing music influenced by such genres like Hip-Hop (Funkee Joint), Dancehall (Warrior Sound), Soul (Groove Me), Drum & Bass (Silently Bad Minded (Roni Size Radio Edit)), Dub (Metamorph (Pressure Drop Mix)), 2Step (Warrior Sound (Ed Case & Carl H Remix))and everything in between. They did DJ sets, did remixes for other artists and were remixed themselves, their tunes work on headphones or livingroom stereo equipments as well as on radioshows or sound systems. Always serious, sometimes a little bit dark and melancholic, everytime very intelligent, groovy music.
Pressure Drop present almost every style of London based black club music in the 1990s, last but not least showcased on their "London Underground" compilations (the Raw Stylus version of Bill Withers´"Use me" is one of my alltime favourite tracks).

You may Sit & Wonder (but we call it Dub!) Vol.2 [1979 - 2015]

Still sitting and wondering? Right, so here´s the second part. Starting with the Dub version of the underground hit "Blue Eye Boy" by the sound pioneers of Renegade Soundwave. I saw them live first time at the Berlin Atonal 5 in March 1990, it was ground breaking!

Raw Stylus were part of the Acid Jazz movement and presents here their remix of the Bill Withers tune „Use me“.

The Senior Allstars from Germany play the instrumental version of the Tamlins´ „Baltimore“, Sly & Robbie did two different dub versions of it, too. The orginal song was sang by Randy Newman and of course by: Nina Simone.

Again a Senoir Allstars version, the Chosen Brothers´ „Mango Walk“, again a reggae classic, this time originated by the In-Crowd. The Bullwackie Dubwise Version was re-released by the Berlin Rhytm & Sound Crew in 1998.

Peikko & Lassi´s „Pula Dub“ seems to be a One-Hit-Wonder from Finland, the 12" was produced by Jimi Tenor.

And at last: a UB40 tune, named after a 1964 British science fiction film. Special to the movie is the use of silence to create a chilling athmosphere.

We had a lot of names for this kind of music in the 90s, but Dub is still the core. Quality music from different sources: some tunes are taken from rare 12-inches, some from cheap compilations. This selection was created for La Schnätt´s birthday party this year.

Lee "Scratch" Perry, the Upsetter - Original Dub Dadaist Speaks No Evil (1990-2019)

About 35 years from now I started my journey into a musical universe called "DUB". In the the summer of 1984 I met a guy, who knowed, that I was already interested in Reggae music. He told me: "You like Reggae? Okay, come to my house and I will show you something you will love." This was the first time I heard artists like Augustus Pablo, Jacob Miller, Rico Rodriguez, Deadly Headly, Aswad, Prince Far I, Pablo Gad and last (but realy not least): Lee "Scratch" Perry, the Upsetter! Thank you for opening this musical door for me, Robby!

The works of Mr. Perry can be divided in three parts:a singing carreer, and than before and after the Black Ark burned down. The first parts were showcased in a lot of compilations, mixtapes and podcasts. So it is time to pay attention to the third part, when chanting, singing and toasting are the main things.

This mix starts with one of the first Lee "Scratch" Perry / Mad Professor colaborations taken from the album "Mystic Warrior" and it´s Dub counterpart. After all the years one of my favourite albums. Followed by a Dub Syndicate tune, one of the many works with Adrian Sherwodd and the On-U-Sound crew. Over the years the Upsetter works with many musicans and producers: Pura Vida, Subatomic Sound System, Bill Laswell, Alpha Steppa or ERM, to name only a few. Some specials are on this mix tape: Sound Of Jamaica (Horns version) is taken from the bunch of extra versions, that were given to the crowdfounding members, that make the album "Back On The Controls" possible. And the teaser for the upcoming new AMS / LSP thing: "Rainford".

His lyriks are pure Dadaism: sometimes strange, but most of the time more a Mystic Warrior than a Bad Boy.
