Hart an der Grenze - rebel music inspired by the novel

Wednesday Dec 17, 2008
The titel of novel by Norbert Himme´s "Hart an der Grenze" can be translated in different ways. It could be read as "Close to the edge" or as "Strong at the frontier". The story is about a rebel punk rock youth in the late seventies / early eighties of the last century. It´s about a life on the boring country side of West-Germany. A life between books, music und rebellion. Rebellion against the "normal" live and the downpressing society. And, of course, against the growing power of a nuclear industrie. Reading the book, you´ll find a lot of music between the lines, it was the soundtrack of these times. (Click here and read some lines (in German))The author, a good friend of mine, asked me to mix down an extraction of this sounds. So here it is. And here´s the playlist:

Reggae & Ska Radio 1988 Vol.1

Again from my large tape archive: A selection of tunes played on the radio in Berlin in 1988. The independent radiostation "Radio 100" had a weekly show called "Dubstreet". I recorded it sometimes (to an audiotape, of course). It starts with some heavy Ska tunes, followed by Rocksteady and Rootsreggae (remember: Peter Tosh was killed only a few months ago, Ska had his second revival). And it´s finished with some really fresh Dancehall. So everything, that was hot at this time was presented in this realy good show. Fortunally you got the music, unfortunally there are no comments of the radio DJs.
So here´s the playlist:
- -?-: The Lord is with me
- Jackie Opel: Wood inna di fire
- Warren Allan: Babylon (Studio 1, 1964)
- -?-: -?-
